PLAIN

PLAIN is a bench and stool with a clear architectural presence, inspired by paper planes and made from two folded aluminium sheets—reduced to the essentials yet surprisingly expressive. Its elegance emerges directly from its structural logic and reflects Damian Byland’s design approach: transforming industrial materials into functional everyday objects through minimal, precise interventions. Thanks to its restrained yet distinctive form, PLAIN adapts naturally to a wide range of settings. Whether placed in a museum, public space, garden, foyer, terrace or domestic interior, it enters into a quiet dialogue with its surroundings. Rather than imposing itself, PLAIN complements different architectural and spatial contexts through its precise geometry, material clarity and calm visual presence. The anodised surface protects against weather and scratches, making PLAIN suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. The entire bench—including all screws—is made from 100% aluminium, making it fully recyclable by material type. This consistent choice of material enables a closed-loop system and emphasises the commitment to durability.

PLAIN is currently in use at the Gewerbemuseum Winterthur, where it demonstrates its ability to function as both a practical seating object and a formally integrated element within a cultural and architectural context.
